A $6.3 Billion Binance Hack Could Shift Trading Toward Uniswap
Standard Chartered sees the $6.3 billion Binance breach as a potential driver of decentralized-exchange trading, but UNI fell 10.4% as the broader crypto market remained under pressure.

Standard Chartered’s Geoffrey Kendrick said the approximately $6.3 billion Binance breach on October 29 could increase trading on decentralized exchanges, with Uniswap positioned to benefit after the initial disruption settles. According to crypto.news, Kendrick maintained a $100 price target for UNI by 2030 while warning that cryptocurrency prices could fall further before stabilization.
What happened at Binance on October 29?
The breach affected approximately $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency, prompting Binance to suspend deposits and withdrawals while conducting security checks.
The immediate market response included losses across several major assets. BNB fell more than 8% over 24 hours, Bitcoin traded near $77,000, AAVE declined 11.3% to $118.54, and Uniswap’s UNI dropped 10.4% to $6.48, according to CoinGecko figures cited by Cointelegraph. Hyperliquid’s HYPE gained approximately 15% after ICE announced plans to develop a regulated US perpetual futures market with Trade.xyz.
Could the DEX trading share keep rising?
Kendrick expects the breach to increase decentralized exchanges’ trading share relative to centralized platforms, although he does not expect an immediate benefit while the market disruption remains underway (Ground News) (TradingView). He also said Uniswap had never experienced an exploit and argued that the attack on Binance could help decentralized exchanges capture a larger share of cryptocurrency trading.
"I would encourage investors to re-engage with Uniswap" — Geoffrey Kendrick, global head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered
CoinGecko’s second-quarter data showed that the trading-volume ratio between the top 10 spot decentralized and centralized exchanges reached 23.5% in the second quarter of 2026, up 2.1 percentage points from the first quarter.
The market data provided a broader picture of decentralized trading:
- DEX-to-CEX ratio: The top 10 spot decentralized exchanges reached 23.5% of the corresponding centralized-exchange volume in Q2 2026.
- Uniswap’s position: Uniswap accounted for 41.2% of volume among the 10 largest decentralized spot exchanges, with $168.5 billion in trading volume.
- Contracting activity: Top DEX spot volume fell 26.5% to $408.9 billion, while centralized exchanges recorded $1.95 trillion, a 27.9% decline from Q1 2026.
Uniswap’s Q2 volume was down 21.4% from the previous quarter, while PancakeSwap followed with $80.7 billion. Binance nevertheless remained the largest centralized spot exchange in CoinGecko’s ranking, with a 38.7% share among the 10 largest centralized platforms.
What changed in on-chain trading conditions?
The DEX-to-CEX ratio had risen before the Binance breach, even as trading activity declined across both venue types. Binance’s suspension of deposits and withdrawals affected the exchange while it conducted security checks, while the reported DEX figures described the volume recorded across the 10 largest decentralized spot exchanges.
The venue data covers the routes used for on-chain execution, including those used by a DeFi arbitrage bot. The sources do not provide bot-performance data or establish how the suspension affected automated strategies such as a Binance arbitrage bot. Exchange-level volumes also remain distinct from the activity of individual wallets tracked through copy trading crypto.
What could establish a new market base?
Kendrick expects further negative price action in the near term as investigators examine the attack and efforts continue to recover the stolen funds. He identified the release of frozen assets and more details about the hack as the factors he would watch before a new market base emerged.
Standard Chartered’s earlier forecast projected that total value locked in decentralized finance could reach $2.7 trillion by 2030, with Uniswap emerging as an important trading venue for tokenized assets. Kendrick retained his $100 target for UNI in 2030 and said the Binance incident could strengthen the case for that forecast being too low.
