Ethereum, Altcoins Suffer Outsized Drawdowns as Macro Pressures Mount

Ethereum, XRP and Solana all dropped significantly on October 15 as macro pressures pushed crypto lower. ETH fell 5.5% to $289B market cap while the broader crypto market slipped 2.5% to $2.8T, with analysts pointing to CPI data and rate hike expectations as key drivers.

Altcoins Take Heavy Hits as Macro Headwinds Intensify

Major altcoins experienced "outsized drawdowns" on October 15, with Ethereum sliding 5.5% to a $289 billion market cap, XRP falling 5.1% to $82.4 billion, and Solana slipping 3.8% to $60.6 billion. The broader cryptocurrency market cap dropped 2.5% to $2.8 trillion, while Bitcoin—typically seen as a safer bet—declined 3.1% on the day and 2.6% on the week, holding steady at a $1.6 trillion market cap.

The selloff was triggered by the consumer price index rising 3.7% year-over-year in September, with prediction markets now pricing in a 28% chance of an October interest rate hike. The 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.36% on October 7, its highest level since 2002, reflecting persistent inflation and bets on another Federal Reserve rate hike (admiralmarkets.com).

Hedging Activity Doubles as Institutional Players Pull Back

Nick Forster, founder of options trading exchange Derive.xyz, noted that hedging activity on his platform doubled as whales pulled back on optimistic bets placed earlier in spring. Luke Nolan, senior research associate at CoinShares, explained that altcoins behave as high-beta assets that get hit harder during market turbulence.

"Alts are typically more sensitive to financial conditions, and tightening affects the premise of liquidity expanding." — Luke Nolan, senior research associate at CoinShares

The U.S. dollar hitting a near 18-month high compounds the pressure. According to Nolan, over a medium-term horizon, crypto tends to have an inverse relationship with the US Dollar Index. The primary reasons are that crypto is denominated in dollars, but also because a strengthening greenback tightens liquidity conditions and reduces risk appetite across markets.

Federal Reserve Signals Further Tightening

The Federal Reserve raised rates by 0.25 percentage points on September 16, 2026, setting the Fed funds rate range at 3.75% to 4.00%. The vote was 12 to 0, marking the first hike since July 2023 and the first move under Chair Kevin Warsh. CME FedWatch data implied roughly a 77% chance of a hold at the October 27-28 meeting, with futures also implying about an 81% chance of at least one hike by the December 9 meeting.

Profit-Taking After Strong Altcoin Run

The decline also represents a natural hangover from altcoins' momentum over recent months. Data from Max Shannon, senior associate at Bitwise Europe, shows futures open interest in altcoins (excluding Ethereum) has declined by $8 billion since October began. This reflects traders removing capital after the significant gains posted in prior months.

Ethereum particularly stands out—it outperformed Bitcoin for three consecutive months, the first time since March 2021. That strength has now triggered widespread profit-taking. Ethereum ETFs saw 11 straight trading days of net outflows totalling $782.8 million before a brief inflow on Tuesday, followed by $129.5 million in net outflows, per CoinGlass data (Decrypt).

"This price action is more of a consolidation period for altcoins that have already done well," Shannon said. In his view, the tokens showing the strongest performance recently tend to move in tandem with Bitcoin during downturns, though with greater sensitivity to price swings. This pattern may persist in the near term.
